With the creation of the United Nations (UN) Peacebuilding Fund in 2006, peacebuilding became formally institutionalized in an organization that marks ‘the establishment’ of the international community. This new office followed the pattern seen in many multi-mandate international non-governmental organizations, such as Catholic Relief Services or CARE, who over the past decade have formalized peacebuilding into their mandate and staffing structures.
